ZitatThe Stars prevailed 6-5 in a shoot-out tonight at Rexall Place in Edmonton as Vojtech Polak had the only goal of the extra frame. Dallas' regulation goals were scored by Polak (2), Matt Nickerson, Yared Hagos and Junior Lessard. Polak finished the game with four points (2G,2A). Stars Goaltenders Dan Ellis and Mike Smith combined for the win.

Day 2 ;D

Zitat1) Guerin/Arnott
… Both players are in Group B and the two were paired together during the scrimmage. Guerin scored a nice goal on a one-timer. Miettinen also skated with one or the other on several shifts.
2) Speaking of Miettinen
… This guy just does everything well. He’s a smooth skater, he passes well, shoots well, backchecks, everything. I think he’ll log a lot of ice time in the pre-season and certainly has a shot at cracking one of the top-3 lines this season.
3) James Neal
… Neal stood out to me a few times. He has good offensive skills and looked poised on the ice. Still needs a lot of work in the defensive zone, but he seems like a solid prospect.
4) Janos Vas
… I know he’s off most people’s radar but this guy impressed me. He’s a really good stick handler, made some good passes, and he’s not afraid to hit or take a hit. Remember this guy was a 2nd round pick in ’02 and I think he could become a solid NHLer one day. I actually randomly met him after the scrimmage and practice. You could tell by talking to him that he loves hockey, he said he played in Sweden last year, and (although his first priority would be playing in Dallas) he said he expects to play in Iowa this year. Keep an eye on Vas; he’s an easy guy to root for.
5) Eriksson/Jokinen
… Eriksson is very impressive in person. Good skater, good speed, good offensive skills. Like most young players, he still needs to get bigger and needs to work on his defensive play. Other than that he looks like a very good prospect. Jokinen is in Group A so I will have more about him tomorrow, but so far not bad. He hasn’t done anything spectacular and hasn't done anything terrible. More than likely needs time in Iowa; at least to start the season.
6) Endless Fistric Debate
… Mark Fistric is tall, but every time I look at him I just can’t help but think I could be watching Travis Zajac or Rob Schremp out there. I haven’t seen much (good or bad) out of Fistric in camp, but I kind of feel for the kid. He will have a lot of pressure on him over the next few years and that pressure will only be compounded if Zajac or Schremp or Wolski turn out to be good NHLers.
7) Lessard
… I have to agree with GLU on this one: Lessard just doesn’t do it for you. He’s not a bad player, but nothing about him is impressive. IMO he won’t make this team and probably won’t ever play consistently in the NHL. I see him as a bigger version of Darren Haydar: dominating college hockey player, but just not cut out for the NHL. Hopefully he’ll prove me wrong.
8) Random Notes
… Steve Ott seemed to be having fun out there. He jokingly hooked Arnott after Group B scored a goal.
… Speaking of Arnott, this guy is so huge. I know it’s been said so many times, but Jason should be a monster out there every night. He just doesn’t take advantage of his size.
… Modano was humorous during Group A drills. He stood at center ice shooting pucks at Turco while players were doing drills on the opposite side of the rink.
… Stu Barnes looks solid. Barnes is important to this team this year with all of these rookies expected to be on the team. He has a lot of experience and seems to be one of those “glue” type of players. He can still put up a few points too.
… Jon Klemm and Dan Jancevski each dished out some big hits. Jancevski actually looks decent in his own end.

Nr. 1 freut mich sehr!

ZitatScrimmage

In the first scrimmage of the camp, Group A beat Group B 4-2. Group A took a quick 2-0 lead when Jere Lehtinen and Sergei Zubov beat goalie Johan Hedberg. Other goal scorers for Group A were Ned Havern and Mike Modano. Antti Miettinen and Bill Guerin scored on Marty Turco for Group B's two goals.

Scrimmage Notes

Mathias Tjarnqvist spent time playing left wing with Mike Modano and Jere Lehtinen during the scrimmage. The line was pretty effective.

Various players on a line with Bill Guerin and Jason Arnott. Among them were Antti Miettinen, Loui Eriksson and B.J. Crombeen.

As camp and the pres-season progress, Brenden Morrow is expected to get a look at the left wing spot with Modano and Lehtinen. Miettinen is considered an early favorite to land the left wing spot with Guerin and Arnott.

Some of the defensive combinations that were used in the scrimmage included Sergei Zubov paired with John Erskine at times and with Martin Skoula at others. Philippe Boucher and Trevor Daley spent some time as a defensive pairing as well.

Player Focus: Antti Miettinen

Antti Miettinen scored a goal in the scrimmage and then scored a spectacular goal in the post-scrimmage shootout drill.  After putting on a series of  moves combined with some slick puckhandling, he was able to slide the puck past Marty Turco. Miettinen also showed some deft stickhandling skills as he weaved his way through traffic during the scrimmage to create a scoring change.
