Ja da muß ich dir LEIDER[/i] recht geben !

Jetzt haltet doch wenigstens PLatz 6....

Achja danke an alle Quellen etc.

;D

Devils look for defense

By DARREN EVERSON
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

The Devils are off until tomorrow night's divisional clash with Philadelphia at the Meadowlands, but their general manager most certainly is not.
With the trade deadline at 3 p.m. tomorrow, the Devils figure to be active. Having already revamped the defending Stanley Cup champs at center, Lou Lamoriello is expected to gear up further for the playoffs by adding a defenseman.

The Devils themselves won't say that they need reinforcements - they are, after all, almost entirely the same team that won the Cup last season - but surely none of them would be surprised to see another new face.

"I don't think we're done," center John Madden said. "I'm not saying that because I think we need to add players. ... (but) there's always a player out there who can help your club."

Judging by Lamoriello's decision to join the team in Raleigh on Saturday for the final game of a four-game road trip, Madden may be right.

Lamoriello is believed to be interested in Carolina defenseman Sean Hill, who recently agreed to waive his no-trade clause. Hill is said to have agreed to go to one of two teams - the Devils and Stars - and Lamoriello did speak with Carolina GM Jim Rutherford on Saturday.

Other possibilities include the Capitals' Brendan Witt and the Rangers' Greg de Vries.

The Devils need to shore up a defense that has suffered without Scott Stevens. The penalty kill has especially been hurt by Stevens' absence, although the Devils' captain is expected to return from his post-concussion-like symptoms by the end of the season.

Zitat
March 8, 2004 -- The Devils may have to make their first-ever deal with the devil, which is how their fans regard the Rangers.
Lou Lamoriello's options are dwindling. Bolstering his defense may require him to trade for ex-Devil Vladimir Malakhov, while Greg de Vries and Boris Mironov are also possibilities.

This next day stands as the Devils' last, best, chance to successfully defend the Stanley Cup for once. Unless a big deal that doesn't appear to be happening suddenly materializes, Lamoriello may be wasting that golden chance at securing his team's place among the legends with a fourth Cup in 10 years.

It will be different when they return from the lockout that this trading frenzy is all-but-announcing. Scott Stevens may decide he's played enough, the 30-year-old restricteds might be sprung as unrestricted by a new CBA, and the game itself might be less conducive to Devils-style hockey and Wandering Martin Brodeur. By then, the old guard will have changed, and the Devils will have to be luckier even than they were last year to win another Cup quickly after the lockout.

Do-Little Lou has already done a pair of little deals, trading for Viktor Kozlov and Jan Hrdina to bolster the center position, and add righty pivots. But it may come to tomorrow afternoon's 3 p.m. EST deadline before he can land the defenseman he needs.

That backliner may well turn out to be Washington's Brendan Witt, as reported here two weeks ago. Aside from the flock of Rangers, Lamoriello's other options seem to be vanishing.

Lamoriello is believed to flatly rejected dealing collegiate hotshot Zach Parise for Brian Leetch, but is said to have discussed re-acquiring Malakhov from the Rangers. The two neighbors have never made a deal since the Devils moved from Denver in 1982. Lamoriello has long had interest in Mironov, and Malakhov won a Cup with New Jersey in 2000.

Word is that talks have cooled off with Carolina for Sean Hill, but those discussions are almost certain to be rekindled before the trading ban strikes. Buffalo is virtually precluded from dealing Alexei Zhitnik by its refusal to concede the final Eastern playoff berth. Unless minds change in Florida, where Lyle Odelein is expected to stay put, and Anaheim, where Keith Carney is supposed to be remaining, Lamoriello's options are limited.

A scoring winger is the other big need, and Valeri Bure might be that answer, or Atlanta's Shawn McEachern. Jeff O'Neill might not fit with Lamoriello's style. Otherwise, Lamoriello might seek a veteran backup for Brodeur, although Scott Clemmensen has done well in limited action. Arturs Irbe and Brian Boucher could be answers there, but it wouldn't seem the need would justify much cost.

They may be different Devils when they resume play tomorrow night against the Flyers at the Meadowlands. If they're not, it could be early summer in the swamp.

* Kozlov skated Saturday for the first time since his Feb. 14 concussion . . . Hrdina made his Devils debut, wearing No. 16, in 4-1 victory in Carolina Saturday.

ZitatDEVILS EXPECTING A DEAL.

NEWARK STAR-LEDGER: Rich Chere reports New Jersey Devils players are steeling themselves for another trade by their GM Lou Lamoriello. It's believed he's in the bidding for the services of Carolina defenceman Sean Hill but it's also possible he could shop for a quality backup for Martin Brodeur (Hill /w Arturs Irbe ?).

NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson reports the trade options for Lamoriello are "dwindling" which could force him to do the unthinkable: swing a trade with the NY Rangers. Everson claims the Rangers are shopping Vladimir Malakhov, as well as possibly Greg de Vries and Boris Mironov. Lamoriello is believed in the market for Washington's Brendan Witt, but his interest in Carolina's Sean Hill may have "cooled". He might also be interested in landing a scoring winger like Atlanta's Shawn McEachern or Florida's Valeri Bure.

Walzy

Also man darf gespannt sein.

Gast
