ZitatBLUE JACKETS CLAIM CENTER MANNY MALHOTRA OFF WAIVERS FROM DALLAS STARS
Former NY Rangers' first round pick expected to join club for Saturday's game vs. NY Islanders

COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed center Manny Malhotra off waivers from the Dallas Stars, club General Manager/Head Coach Doug MacLean announced today.  Malhotra (pronounced mal-HOH-truh) is expected to join the  Blue Jackets in time for Saturday’s game against the New York Islanders.  Game time at Nationwide Arena is set for 7 p.m.

Malhotra, 23, has appeared in nine games with Dallas this season, registering four penalty minutes.  In 2002-03, he collected 3-7-10 and 42 penalty minutes in 59 games during his first full season with the Stars.  In 290 career NHL games, he has tallied 23-29-52 and 141 penalty minutes with the Stars and New York Rangers.

“This move is in line with what we are tying to do in that we’re adding youth, size and speed to our lineup,” said MacLean.  â€œManny is a solid two-way centerman who has great size and speed.  He’s played with two veteran-heavy organizations during his career so this is a great opportunity for him and for us to see what he is capable of.”

A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Malhotra was the Rangers’ first pick, seventh overall, in the 1998 Entry Draft.  He made his Rangers debut as an 18-year-old in 1998-99 and collected 8-8-16 and 13 penalty minutes in 73 games that season.  He picked up 19-22-41 and 90 penalty minutes in 206 games with New York in four seasons before being traded to Dallas along with Barrett Heisten for Martin Rucinsky and Roman Lyashenko on Mar. 12, 2002.

Prior to turning pro, Malhotra spent two seasons playing major junior hockey with the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm from 1996-98.  He collected 32-63-95 and 55 penalty minutes in 118 career OHL games, including 16-35-51 in 57 games in 1997-98 as he helped Guelph compile the best record in the OHL that season.  He added 7-6-13 in 12 playoff games to lead the Storm to the OHL Playoff championship and a spot in the Memorial Cup tournament, where the club was defeated in the Finals by the Portland Winter Hawks.

Malhotra was also a key member of two Canadian National Junior Teams as he represented his country at the 1998 and 2000 World Junior Championships.  In 2000, he served as team captain and tallied 0-2-2 in seven games to help Canada capture the bronze medal.  He was scoreless in seven games in 1998.

The Blue Jackets return to action Saturday vs. the New York Islanders.  Emmy Award-winning coverage of Blue Jackets hockey on Fox Sports Net begins at 6:30 with the Ice Breaker pre-game show and concludes with a new post-game show, Blue Jackets Ice Cap, immediately following the game.  The game can also be heard on the Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship stations WBNS-AM (Sports Radio 1460 the Fan) and WWCD-FM (CD101).

Blue Jackets grab Malhotra off waivers

Canadian Press

11/21/2003

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CP) - The Columbus Blue Jackets have given Manny Malhotra new life, claiming the former first-round draft pick off waivers from the Dallas Stars on Friday.

Had Malhotra not been picked up Friday, he would have been sent to the Utah Grizzlies of the American Hockey League.

The Stars felt Malhotra needed some time in the minors after he was scoreless in nine games this season and averaged just seven minutes 47 seconds per game.

The six-foot-two, 215-pound centre produced his best offensive NHL season with the New York Rangers in 1998-99, when he recorded eight goals and eight assists in 73 games.

Malhotra, a fourth-line checker who's due to make $1 million US this season, was expected to join the Blue Jackets in time for Saturday's game against the New York Islanders.

``This move is in line with what we are tying to do in that we're adding youth, size and speed to our lineup,'' said Columbus GM Doug MacLean. ``Manny is a solid two-way centreman who has great size and speed.''

A native of Mississauga, Ont., Malhotra was the Rangers' first pick, seventh overall, in the 1998 draft. He spent his entire junior career with the OHL's Guelph Storm.
