The San Jose Sharks finished off an otherwise forgettable season of the St. Louis Blues by eliminating them in five games, setting the table for what might be an off-season of change.

There's been speculation for months that they won't requalify Chris Pronger, whom it would cost an additional ten percent of his $9.5 million salary to retain as a restricted free agent. However, the club seems determined to keep him around and Pronger himself suggested he might sign a long term contract for less money.

Veteran goalie Chris Osgood was underwhelming in the playoffs, leading to suggestions management won't re-sign him. However, without this summer's UFA market considered a weak one, it's possible they might retain him for another year while giving one of the young goalies in their system an opportunity to step up.

Injuries to their blueline, notably to Al MacInnis and Barrett Jackman, were difficult to overcome, while a lack of scoring depth beyond their first line of Keith Tkachuck, Pavol Demitra and Doug Weight also contributed to their middling regular season and their first round exit.

There's know some talk that GM Larry Pleau might be on the hotseat, as some of his moves, like dealing away promising young talent to acquire Tkachuk, did nothing to turn the Blues into the Cup contender they appeared poised to become four years ago.

Factor in the shocking arrest of tough-guy forward Mike Danton for apparently attempting to murder his gay lover by hiring a hitman, and it's shaping up to be an interesting off-season in St. Louis!

Walzy

v-man

Blues to cut payroll
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Blues trimmed their payroll for this season by a few million dollars after losing in the first round of the 2003 playoffs.
After struggling to get into the playoffs and then making an early exit again in 2004, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports general manager Larry Pleau plans to trim the payroll again and go with a younger team next season.

"We want to be competitive," Pleau told the paper. "We're going to cut payroll. We did some last year and we'll continue to cut payroll. ... If you look at the National Hockey League today, success is not dictated by how much your payroll is. The parity of the game is so close right now.

"Things can change quick. It's easy to say we're going to change everybody. We're not going to change everybody. We're going to try to make the proper changes, create a chemistry that's competitive and get ourselves back to being competitive with other teams. ... Is it going to take a year, is it going to take two years? Only time is going to dictate that. But we are going to get younger and our payroll is going to be less."

Pleau told the Post-Dispatch the size of the payroll hasn't been set but will be "considerably less" than the $60 million the Blues spent this season. He also said the team will stay out of the high-priced free agent market.

The Blues plan build around Chris Pronger and his $9.5 million salary. Keith Tkachuk will make $9 million and center Doug Weight $7 million.

Getting rid of Tkachuk or Weight will be tricky, claims the newspaper, since both have no-trade clauses. One player who seems likely to be dealt is forward Pavol Demitra, a restricted free agent who made $6.5 million last season.

The Blues also have to make a decision about goalie Chris Osgood. The team has an option on him for next season at $3.3 million. If the Blues decide not to keep him, they will have to acquire a goalie or turn the spot over to young backups Reinhard Divis or Curtis Sanford.

ZitatDerrick Goold yesterday reported changes are in order for the Blues in the wake of their disappointing season and first round exit as GM Larry Pleau said he had "decisions to make". It's believed Brian Savage will be returned to the Phoenix Coyotes and must decide if they'll re-sign forward Pavol Demitra, who's once again a restricted free agent. While it's likely Doug Weight and Keith Tkachuk may be back next season, Goold suggests the club might consider shopping one of them to make room on their payroll to perhaps pursue a free agent in this summer's UFA market, and they could also shop Demitra. They'd like to retain gritty veteran forward Dallas Drake but at a reduced salary. The club has a team option on Chris Osgood, who won 30 games this season and would like to return but played poorly in the post-season. Goold says it's unclear if they'll exercise that option. As for Chris Pronger, Goold reports the Blues intend to qualify him at his current salary and then sign him to a long-term, cheaper contract following the settling of the next collective bargaining agreement.
