Walzy

tja....jetzt isses wohl soweit

As reported earlier on Hockeycentral, Sportsnet has learned Dominik Hasek has agreed to terms with the Ottawa Senators.

The Ottawa Senators will have a new goalie whenever the next NHL season begins.

Report: Sens looking to deal Bonk

TSN.ca Staff
6/24/2004
After spending 10 years with the Ottawa Senators, Radek Bonk's days with the club appear to be numbered.
According to a report in the Ottawa Sun, Senators general manager John Muckler has been trying to deal the 28-year old centre, but his $3.5 million salary has been a deterrent.
If Muckler can't work out a trade, there is speculation that the team won't give Bonk a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent.

ZitatOTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the Senators are the "leading contender" to sign goaltender Dominik Hasek, but there is concern "the Dominator" might sign with another team for a better offer. Garrioch cites the Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues as also having interest in Hasek, but the Senators are believed making the most serious offer. The Detroit Red Wings, who still own Hasek's rights until July 1, have apparently given him permission to shop himself around the league

Martin Prusek wird´s freuen... :D:
Ich hab irgendwie den Verdacht, dass Hasek mit aller Gewalt seinen Einzug in die Hall of Fame verhindern will. :pillepalle:

The Ottawa Senators are making a pitch for Detroit Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek and Senators general manager John Muckler is in serious talks with his agent, Rich Winter, according to a report in the Calgary Sun.
An NHL source, speaking on condition of anonymity, cautioned that the deal is not done but that Hasek may be in Ottawa this weekend.
"Dominik Hasek wants to come back and Ottawa might be the right fit for him," the source told the newspaper.
It is believed the Senators have looked at Hasek's medical records to make sure he's fully recovered from the groin surgery he had in May. Indications are Hasek is feeling good, according to the Sun. His surgery was a success and he's hired a personal trainer in the Czech Republic.
Hasek, 39, dressed for only 14 games with the Red Wings last season and was forced to leave the team midway through the season with chronic groin problems. He finished with an 8-3-0 record, a 2.21 GAA and a .907 save percentage.

Und Teil 2:

Leafs winger Gary Roberts, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, is apparently looking for a new home as the result of clashes with Leafs' coach Pat Quinn.

There is an obvious tie to Ottawa for Roberts. He excelled with the Ottawa 67's of the OHL and reportedly still trains in Ottawa at the Athletic Conditioning Centre in the off-season. The gritty winger has often been held up as a shining example of what the Senators lack in their quest for the Cup. But would Ottawa fans embrace the idea of sleeping with the enemy?

Considering that the Senators are still a young team in comparison to the rest of the NHL, there is not much cause for panic simply because of an early playoff exit.

Cup champion teams tend to have to face some adversity before hoisting hockey's ultimate prize, and Ottawa is no different. The 2003-04 season should be viewed as a learning process. Expectations were set very high, with many experts at the start of the season predicting a parade down Bank Street in early June. Maybe those expectations were too much for the players to handle.

The only sidebar that will complicate the summer's business is the potential labor stoppage that looms ominously over the NHL. But owner Eugene Melnyk seems like the kind of hockey fan that will not plan for the worst at the expense of his club's present.

There likely won't be as many changes to the roster as many believe, which is a good thing. Keeping perspective may be hard to do at this point for Senators' fans, but the reality of the situation is that this team was good enough to win had it not been for the outstanding performance of Ed Belfour.

For all we know, there could still be hockey in Ottawa if only a bounce or two went the Senators' way. But that's all irrelevant now....

Abolish The Senate
By Dan Rakusan
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Ottawa Senators ended their 2003-04 campaign with the most painful playoff loss suffered to date by the team. A first-round exit at the hands of an inferior Toronto Maple Leafs squad, thanks largely to Ed Belfour's rejuvenated performance, instantly gave GM John Muckler some things to think about.
Firstly, head coach Jacques Martin was fired. Martin's tenure in Ottawa (8 seasons and change) was symbolic of the Senators' rise in the NHL from expansion team to elite team. But his inability to coach them to a Stanley Cup, or past the Leafs for that matter, meant it was time to part ways.

Rumors suggest that Martin and Muckler were at odds where some roster issues were concerned.

Muckler made several trades to improve team toughness (Todd Simpson, Rob Ray, Greg de Vries), but these players were rarely inserted into the lineup once the playoffs began. Only de Vries was a regular player, and some would question why he was not scratched in favor of Simpson considering his poor play.

Currently, the Senators have said that a coaching decision will likely be made within the next two weeks, with former Coyotes' bench boss Bob Francis apparently the early favorite for the job.

Secondly, the issue of Patrick Lalime and his inconsistent play was raised. Lalime is a very good goaltender - there is little doubt. But his season was one of peaks and valleys, which does not yield good playoff results. All too often, he would allow a weak goal when it mattered most. Only once in the 7 game series versus Toronto was he as good as his Maple Leaf counterpart.

Now, only a month removed from the playoff picture, talk has already begun about replacing Lalime. The biggest name to surface as a possible replacement for Lalime is that of Dominik Hasek.

Hasek is coming off of an injury-plagued season, and is an unrestricted free agent. His history with John Muckler in Buffalo could be an influencing factor for The Dominator, and even if he doesn't serve as a full time number one goalie, he could still fill a role with the team.

Ottawa's backup, Martin Prusek, often draws comparisons to Hasek because of his unruly style. What better mentor for Prusek than his boyhood idol? With Phil Myre having been relieved of his duties as goaltending coach, Hasek could find long-term employment with the Senators, and certainly would not make the team any worse with his presence.

The Senators have some personnel issues to examine as well. While everyone is already suggesting that Radek Bonk will be dealt, there are bigger problems than the best two-way center on the roster.

Will Greg de Vries be back in Ottawa? de Vries was acquired for promising defenseman Karel Rachunek at the trade deadline, and it seems that may have been too high a price. The veteran blueliner looked horribly out of place on a team laden with so much speed. He did not develop any chemistry at all with either Chris Phillips or Wade Redden, and was unable to deliver the upside that was expected from him. Despite this, he could still hold considerable trade value, and may allow the Senators to acquire some grit on the left wing.

Another name that might be relocated out of Ottawa is that of Peter Bondra. Bondra was a disappointment offensively for the Sens, but played a fairly strong back-checking game. However, one would argue that Bondra's abilities are wasted if he is to take on a checking role full-time. He is a goal-scorer, and a very good one. Considering his age, Ottawa may want to trigger the club option that remains on his contract, or risk losing him (possibly in a return to the Washington Capitals).

Wade Redden is an enigma. There is plenty to like about the smooth-skating defenseman, both no the ice and off, but one has to wonder if his reputation exceeds his ability. Often guilty of poor first passes out of his zone, Redden is a major risk for turnovers. He doesn't play a physical style, and while he does have some good offensive upside, his role in that capacity has been taken over by Zdeno Chara. Redden's value on the open market may never be higher than it is right now, and so GM Muckler should at least listen to offers.

Irony is a part of hockey, or any other professional sport. Perhaps we shall see an ironic turn of events in Ottawa this summer.

Francis joins Ottawa's mix
TheFourthPeriod.com

Bobby Francis, the 2001-02 Coach Of The Year, has surfaced as a top candidate for the Senators vacant coaching job, reports the Ottawa Sun.
Francis, 44, was fired by the Phoenix Coyotes on February 24 but still has two years left on a deal with the team.

Citing two league sources, the Sun suggests Francis has been given permission to speak with Senators GM John Muckler. There were also indications the two may have met last week at Muckler's Buffalo home.

Francis becomes the third candidate interviewed for Ottawa's coaching position. Former St. Louis Blues coach Joel Quenneville and Toronto Maple Leafs assistant Keith Acton have both held face-to-face sessions with Muckler.

Muckler, however, isn't in a hurry to make a decision. According to the Sun, it's going to be at least two more weeks before the Senators fill their coaching vacancy.
