:wand:

The Blue Jackets haven't scored more than three goals in a game since a 4-3 win over Calgary on Nov. 9. ... Phoenix entered with 11 ties, tops in the NHL. ... Nash has scored 21 of Columbus' 65 goals. ... The Blue Jackets (0-11-1-2) are the only team without a road win.

selbst gegen die schwächelnden Wüstenfüchse reicht es nicht...... :disappointed:

ZitatNO AVERAGE JOE: MOTZKO STARTING FAST
by Warren Kozireski
Filed 12.22.2003

Compared to most NHL teams, the Blue Jackets have an abundance of players in their system that came through the college ranks as opposed to Canadian juniors.  Tim Jackman, Scott Lachance, Todd Marchant, Todd Rohloff and Duvie Westcott with the parent team; Karl Goehring, Mark Hartigan, Joe Motzko, Mike Pandolfo and Darrel Scoville with Syracuse all have entered pro hockey from the Division I ranks of U.S. college hockey. Draft selections such as Justin Aikens from New Hampshire, Jeff Genovy from Clarkson University, Tyler Kolarik from Harvard, Greg Mauldin from UMass and Peter Zingoni from Providence College are on the verge.

Joe Motzko is the latest of this group to enter the pro ranks with a splash.  The forward played four years at St. Cloud State in Minnesota before joining the Crunch for two late games at the end of last season.  In four seasons of college hockey he netted 52 goals and 85 assists in 153 games, including 17 goals and 42 points in 38 games his senior season.  He's proving a quick learner with six goals and 12 points over his first 27 games this season.

"I've had my ups and downs like most first years players, but I'm happy so far and I want to keep on improving game by game," said Motzko.  "I really didn't know what to expect when I came in here.  I just worked hard and good things have happened.  It's been a tough transition, but I've learned a lot from the guys around me."

The 6'0", 184-pound Bemidji, Minnesota native originally signed an amateur tryout contract last April before being signed as a free agent by Columbus in May.  He had his first two-goal game as a pro against Rochester on November 21st and had a three-point game Opening Night against Hershey.  He has three other two-point games to his credit this season and is one of only seven Syracuse players to play in every game.  The key stat as a young player is that he is an even player in the plus/minus department.

Syracuse head coach Gary Agnew has been impressed with Motzko's ability to make the jump into the professional ranks, "As far as first year guys go, he's come in and used his speed well.  He's a smart player with more patience than I thought he would have.  I think he'll go through some ups and downs like most college guys do getting used to the 80 games, but he's got some intangibles that make him a good player.  He needs to work on his consistency.  He goes through periods where he is into the game, having an impact and making an impression.  Then he'll have a couple of games where he won't do anything wrong, but he's not impacting the game and he needs to impact the game with his speed, his shot, his intelligence and his vision on the ice. But so far, so good."

Teammate, and on many nights linemate, Mike Hartigan played three seasons with Motzko at St. Cloud State.  "Off and on we played together with coach changing up lines, but we were stall mates," said Hartigan.  "We're used to each other and have a lot of confidence in each other and we know where each other is going to be in the offensive zone, so it helps a lot."

"Seeing the other young players that play well here get called up to Columbus is definitely an incentive," said Motzko.  "Guys do well down here and get the shot up there, so whenever they call, I'll be happy."

NEWS & NOTES:

• Balloting for the AHL All-Star game is underway through January 4th at theahl.com.  The game features players from Team Canada against players from PlanetUSA, which is comprised of players from the rest of the world.  The skills competition and game will be played February 8-9 in Grand Rapids.

• Starting two days after Christmas, the AHL has been asked by the NHL to experiment with adding two-feet of width to each blue line and the red line.  The lines will change from their present one foot to three-feet wide, which widens the neutral zone by five feet.  The experiment will take place over eight games in Hamilton, Toronto, St. John's and Manitoba.

• With two power play goals in four chances against St. John's on Saturday night, Syracuse ranks second in the league on the power play at 18.3%.

• Odd stat: Syracuse has a .500 record when out-shooting an opponent, but is one game over .500 when being out-shot in a game.

hi
