.Forsberg isn't on trading block, Luukko says By Tim Panaccio

TORONTO - The Flyers are not actively shopping Peter Forsberg, nor have they been receiving calls about his availability in a trade.

That's the straight talk from Peter Luukko, the president and chief operating officer of Comcast-Spectacor, which owns the Flyers.

"Our plan has been and remains to re-sign Peter Forsberg," Luukko said yesterday, addressing the Forsberg rumors. "At some point, we are going to sit down with him and his agent. He's a special player. Now, will Peter want to re-sign here? That is why we have to sit down with him to talk about it. But we want him back."

Luukko confirmed that clubs have called about making a deal with the Flyers but said that none has mentioned Forsberg. It is believed that interim general manager Paul Holmgren has had discussions with Colorado, Calgary, San Jose and Detroit, among others.

Asked whether clubs have inquired specifically about Forsberg, Luukko replied: "We have not had anything close to that."

Last week, Forsberg reiterated his desire to remain a Flyer.

"I haven't given up on this team or this season," the 33-year-old team captain said. "I want to stay here."

The league's 30 general managers will meet tomorrow in Toronto. It is possible that Holmgren will make a trade, but it likely won't be a major deal.

"I think we'll make a deal this week but I don't think it will be a blockbuster," Luukko said. "Homer is doing a lot of fishing right now."

Whatever trade the Flyers make will be discussed among Holmgren, Luukko and club chairman Ed Snider before it occurs. Luukko stressed this is not new. Every deal that former GM Bob Clarke made last season was discussed with Luukko and Snider beforehand, Luukko said.

Luukko said that Web site rumors that the Flyers are about to rip up their team are untrue despite their 3-9-1 start, the worst in the club's 40-year history.

"It's too early to give up on a Mike Richards or a Jeff Carter or our young players," he said. "Maybe if we can get another player in here, we will become a different team... . You never know if this can settle down. But we can't give up on our young players."

Luukko does not expect any clubs to be willing to deal marquee players this early in the season.

He also said the Flyers would not "tank" the season to get a top draft pick. "That's unacceptable to this organization," he said.

Loose pucks. Despite how awful the team is playing, John Stevens' club is just seven points out of the eighth playoff spot. The way they're playing, however, it is hard to imagine the Flyers making the playoffs... . Robert Esche's goals-against average is 5.32 and his save percentage is .814. Antero Niittymaki's GAA is 3.08 and his save percentage is .888. The Flyers' team GAA of 3.95 is second highest in the NHL. Only the Phoenix Coyotes have a worse GAA at 4.50... . The previous worst start for a Flyers team was 3-7-3 in 1992-93. The Flyers missed the playoffs that season.

Ed Moran | Trade rumors circling around the FlyersAND NOW IT'S trade-rumor time.

The Flyers' coach is gone, the GM has resigned, players have been waived, and the losing
continues, 5-3, Saturday night at home to Washington. Trades are all that's left.
So in keeping with the times...

Here's one that has everyone talking as if it's

real: Calgary is going to trade Jarome Iginla and two top prospects to Philadelphia for Simon Gagne, Jeff Carter, R.J. Umberger and prospect Claude Giroux.

Right.

Let's see, the Flames are struggling and want to make lineup changes to wake up the team so they are going to trade their captain Iginla, last season's points leader who leads the team with eight goals and six assists, not to mention his $7 million salary, for Gagne, Carter and Umberger.

And, of course, the Flyers, who need more than a single dynamite player to rescue this season, are going to trade their top winger, their top young center, a solid young center/winger and their top junior prospect.

Iginla would look good on the Flyers right now but exactly whom would he play with, besides Peter Forsberg?

Now, how would I handicap that rumor? Try this - LOL.

I won't pretend to have the "inside sources," and the line on what's going to happen. What I can say is that the Flyers are looking hard, and so are several teams around the league.

There was a report yesterday that had sources saying the Red Wings have been asking about Forsberg. It didn't happen, I was told yesterday.

But teams are calling. And other teams are looking.
Boston, San Jose, Calgary, Phoenix, Chicago, Columbus, the Islanders, the Rangers, New Jersey, Detroit and Ottawa are known to be in the hunt. The general managers' meetings are tomorrow and something could come out of those.

But making trades now isn't easy with salaries to figure in and teams aren't about to dump their best players to make the Flyers better. The Flyers would have to put more into a trade than they can afford. And how in the long run will that help anything? I see a trade for a goalie, which means either Antero Niittymaki or Robert Esche will be moved, and my guess is it will be Esche.

They also need a defenseman. That much has been obvious for a while, and I think Umberger will be in the middle of that. I don't look for Gagne, Carter or Mike Richards to go anywhere. It just doesn't make any sense.

Iginla straight up for Gagne? Who really believes Calgary would do that?

Goaltending is an issue here, as well. Blame as much as you want on Derian Hatcher and Mike Rathje and their lack of speed, but speed is really in puck movement; good transitions and great defense starts in the net.

Niittymaki has a 3.08 goals-against average and an .888 save percentage. He was ranked 46th of the league's 62 goalies yesterday morning. Esche has a 5.32 goals-against average, an .814 save percentage and is ranked 52nd.

If it's OK to point out the

plus-minus stats of the defensemen, it's OK to point out those stats, too.

As for Forsberg, expect him to be the center of stupid rumors all season until and unless the Flyers get him to sign an extension to his 2-year contract, which ends in June.

Forsberg has said he didn't want to talk about an extension until he was sure his ankles were going to be OK.

Continued class act

Alexander Ovechkin at one time might have been a showboat player, but right now he's the kind of guy the league should be marketing. Not only does he score spectacular goals but his celebrations are tempered and he plays to the fans in away arenas.

I don't know how many noticed, but at the end of Saturday night's game, theCapitals' Russian star handed his stick over to a kid wearing a Flyers jersey.

Shut your yaps

The NHL handed out some big fines last week for official bashing. Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish paid $10,000 for going off on Mick McGeough and Atlanta coach Bob Hartley paid the same amount for "verbal abuse," of the officials at the end of the Thrashers' game Friday night against Washington.

Peter Forsberg was being prudent when he opted to leave the Wachovia Center after being ejected Thursday night for his on-ice ref bashing. "I knew I would be fined if I stayed and talked," Forsberg said Friday.

Dieser Satz ist ziemlich unlogisch.  :lachen:

Die Flyers in der jetzigen Form kommen gar nicht in die Playoffs, also was soll man sich da vorstellen ?  :D:
